Recommended Books

General cardiology:

Practical Cardiovascular Medicine (First edition) by Ellis Hanna (ISBN-13: 978-1119233367):

A concise textbook. Pros: Very practical book, published in April 2017- so fairly up-to-date. Cons: Does not go into details of pathophysiology

Cardiology: an Illustrated Textbook (First edition) by Kanu Chatterjee (ISBN-13: 978-9350252758):

I bought this book based on a friend’s recommendation. Although I knew about this book, I had been reluctant to buy because it was published in 2012 (and I had already spent ~ $ 180 for Braunwald’s textbook). Cardiology as well as guidelines have changed significantly since 2012. However, as I started to read I realized that we have not made as significant advances in our understanding of the pathophysiology of heart disease. The first chapter on cardiac anatomy itself was worth paying ~ $ 180 for this book! Highly recommended!!

(If you are trying to choose between Braunwald’s Heart Disease and this book, I would choose this book and combine it with the ACC/AHA guidelines.)

Manual of Cardiovascular Medicine (Fourth edition) by Brian Griffin (ISBN-13: 978-1451131604):

Pros- concise, but still easy to read. Cons- too thick to carry around.

– Cardiology: Handbook for Clinicians (First edition) by Ellis Hanna (ISBN-13: 978-0982292112):

A helpful book if you want to carry around something during initial few calls.

Braunwald’s Heart Disease: A Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine (Tenth edition) (ISBN-13: 978-1455751334)

Echocardiography:

The Echo Manual (Third edition) by Jae Oh (ISBN-13: 978-0781748537):

Great book introductory book. This edition was published in 2006. However, it covers most of the things that you need to know during your first echocardiography month, very easy to read and has a lot of  pictures including tomographic anatomy to understand echo views.

– Textbook of Clinical Echocardiography (Fifth edition) by Catherine Otto (ISBN-13: 978-1455728572):

I found chapters on echo physics, normal TTE, systolic function, valvular stenosis and valvular regurgitation (chapters 1,2,6, 11 and 12) very helpful
